New Year, New Goals

Happy 2015! No resolutions for me this year, but I do have some specific goals (and plans to achieve them). This year my goals are divided into business, family, friends & health. I thought I'd share a few, then talk about why goal-setting is so important, especially with health & fitness.

Business:
1) Finalize business licensing, banking & insurance logistics for Purestuff Wellness.
2) Become certified through a reputable nutrition program.
3) Add 2 or more certifications in movement/fitness-related programs.
4) Increase my client base.
5) Continue to offer my clients a holistic approach to health & fitness. Keep finding new resources to share with them to help them meet their goals by including nutrition, stress management & movement as parts of their lifestyle change.

Family:
1) Figure out the best approach/schooling for X (oldest child).
2) Transition P (youngest child) into full-time day care.
3) Help mom transition into new housing & other lifestyle-related experiences to enhance her life here in Seattle.
4) Expand date nights outside of Capitol Hill neighborhood.
5) Work with J (husband) to better support X & P through their behavioral & learning phases.

Friends:
1) Reach out to friends to plan regular "dates" (lunch, coffee, happy hour, dinners, workouts) 2-4x/month.
2) Travel 2x to visit long-distance (non-WA) friends.
3) Host at least 1 "grown-up" & 1 family-friendly party.
4) Send snail mail birthday cards & thank you notes.

Health:
1) Reduce body fat by 2-3%
2) Train for & complete a WA Spartan Sprint Race.
3) Find a coach to help me lift heavier.
4) Eat more whole foods. Cook/prep/meal plan more/better.

So here is where I started - for example, my business-related thoughts/resolutions started with me saying to myself - "I need to get my business in order, I need to continue my learning, I'm so interested in nutrition, I want to continue to help my clients succeed, I want to make more money/be busier"...and then I had to break it down into realistic goals. Its easy to make general sweeping resolutions. Or proclamations with only subjective outcomes. If you really want to feel successful, you need to make SMART goals. Specific, Measurable, Attainable (or Accountable), Realistic & Time-based goals.

Without breaking it down, it's difficult to know when you have or haven't achieved your resolution. It's also a way to force yourself to get real. It's great to want to make changes, to make yourself better. But it's important to be realistic. To make sure you have the resources & support you need to achieve your goals. To understand WHY you are making certain resolutions or goals.

Don't get me wrong, "getting healthier", "losing weight", or "exercising more," can be reasonable resolutions. But understanding why, how, when & also having help will ensure your success. In particular, if you haven't been active or particularly focused on your overall fitness or nutrition - what magical thing is going to happen to help you all of a sudden? I'm not here to be pessimistic. I'm here to help you be real.

Change can be hard. Change for the right reasons, with the right plan & the right support is attainable. If you have the desire you CAN do it. I want to help you make sure you can make lasting changes. It's not about a detox. Or a diet. Or a workout. It's not about 100% compliance all the time. Making small changes - building one upon another, having support & accountability, listening to your body...that's what it's all about!

Here's to your health & happiness in 2015!
